Women's Rowing Journal - Lauren Gibbons

Oct. 19, 2005

Looking back now, during the last few weeks of fall rowing, it's hard to believe I made it this far. When I first enrolled at Bucknell I figured I wouldn't do a sport and I would just focus on my school work and take time to adjust to college. I wasn't sure I wanted to add a sport to my busy schedule. Regardless of my previous notions, I attended the interest meeting for fall novice rowing and figured I'd give it a try. To my surprise, I absolutely loved it and going to practice was never a chore. In all honesty, though, I wasn't sure I was up for the challenge after attending the first land practices. For a few days after those land practices my hall mates and I were so sore and we nearly felt like giving up. This just made us realize we needed to be in better shape; not only for rowing, but for ourselves and our well being. Determined not to give up, I continued attending practices and learning the sport became thoroughly enjoyable.

It is almost time for the races in Philadelphia and Virginia and as they near, anticipation increases. Are we ready? Will we be able to pull through and show how hard we've worked? I'm sure we will succeed in these endeavors and I know our determination and dedication to rowing will be apparent on Oct. 29 and Nov. 5. I can't imagine us not having fun in the process as well!

Although I was afraid a sport would monopolize my time, rowing has actually forced me not to procrastinate and with this extra commitment I find I'm a more efficient, organized person. Not only has rowing gotten me back in shape and helped to expand my interests, but it has also been a learning and growing experience. Through this I have made so many new friends and I have gained a new confidence in my abilities and the abilities of my teammates. I am proud to have participated in fall novice rowing and I certainly hope to continue rowing through the winter and spring seasons. Thanks for such a great time!
